(Context) Throughout Unit 1, we encountered many different faces and figures of history, explored numerous kingdoms and colonies, and experienced more than a little chaos, ranging from religious upheaval to colonial warfare. In short, we’ve covered an awful lot of ground – and time – in just a few short weeks! That’s the beauty and challenge of history; there is so much to learn and so little time to learn it. Thus, our priority here is to critically analyze the history, to identify what/whom was most consequential in the past and thereby relevant in the present. (Assignment) That being the case, here’s your assignment: write a short paper wherein you identify the one moment, event, or figure you think was the most consequential – for good or ill – to the story of early America (1492-1775) while remaining relevant in America today. Your paper should include the following: ▪ A brief introductory paragraph wherein you (1) identify your choice and (2) establish its historical context (time period, place, etc.). ▪ A thorough and descriptive examination of the details surrounding your chosen figure/moment’s impact and consequence (the who, what, where, and when). o Be precise, incorporating specific examples and details from the historical materials (textbook, web materials, etc.) as often as possible. o You may utilize resources from outside of class, but when doing so, be sure to include citations. o (Note: You are not required to do any outside research.) ▪ Conclude your paper by explaining why you believe your chosen moment/figure was consequential to the story of early America while remaining relevant today. o Your conclusion is the point where you make an argument, justifying why your selection makes sense. You can be as opinionated as you want so long as you refer back to specific examples included in your paper. o (Note: A strong argument is based on facts, not opinion or feelings alone.) All of that being said, this essay does not have to be written as a strictly academic paper – you are free to be as creative as you wish! For example, you can write your paper as: ▪ First-person journal/diary entries ▪ First-person, autobiographical account/memoir ▪ Third-person biographical sketch ▪ Magazine/newspaper interview ▪ Film/documentary advertisement or synopsis ▪ Short story ▪ Formal/traditional essayFormatting expectations: ▪ Minimum length – 500 words; maximum length – 750 words ▪ Double spaced; 12-point font; one-inch margins ▪ Outside research is not required, but if you do utilize external materials, proper citations must be included. o Any citation format is acceptable – MLA, APA, Turabian. o Use the citation standards you’re most comfortable with. ▪ Papers submitted late will be docked five (5) points per day late
